Description

Charge/Discharge – washing line version

Two sets of parallel ‘washing-lines’ are stretched out to fill the performance space. Attendees are invited to clip together the giant circuit and hang capacitors from the line and use DIY Faraday generators to charge capacitors and power synthesisers. The Faraday generators are made from plastic tubes with copper wrappings, which magnets pass through when the tubes are shaken. As the circuits charge and discharge, sustained deep sounds are generated along with difference and summation tones.

The performance/workshop took place in the early hours of the morning. Attendees assembled the instrument and took it in turns to play the device (for two players).

Slumgothic derives from “Slum Gothic”, a characterisation of the architectural style of x-church, formerly the Church of St. John the Divine, Gainsborough. x-church hosts resident artists, shows challenging art, helps young people and helps people with mental ill health. It is ‘a space where things can happen’.
