Quotations from participants and artists

From the jury of the 2015 YEAH! Award: “Eersteklasconcerten is a unique, immersive experience for first grade students to become familiar with the sounds and process of contemporary music. The project epitomises the very essence of creating and playing music. All communication takes place via music, sound and movement. This is an ideal example of contemporary music mediation that relies on the motivation and activity of a young audience as well as the musicians – without reducing the artistic quality. Excellently done!”

Do you have any data on the longer-term impact of the project/event on participants?

Most classes attend each year. Teachers (but not all) built further on the children’s experiences during the event supported by a map with classroom activities.

Please give details about what steps have been taken to make projects or events accessible to people with disabilities or learning difficulties:

Access to people with disabilities is provided by the venue. Also groups of children with limited mental disabilities succesfully take part, without fundamentally changing the approach of the workshops.

Please provide 5 key recommendations for determining good practice in projects that aim to engage new audiences with new music?

1 – Make the music tangible in the literal sense.
2 – Make the whole event a composition in its own right
3 – Make musical interaction possible
4 – All aspects of the event should be of a high artistic level
5 – Don’t talk. Let the music speak for itself

Future plans

The format of Eersteklasconcerten is repeated each year. We experiment with families as a target group, as well as with the general public. We’ll focus on historically informed music and classical music as well.
