Grüntaler is a mobile project focused on the curation, production and promotion of experimental music, sound art and related practices. Grüntaler seeks to bring visibility and awareness to local and Berlin-based artists with an emphasis on gender diversity & visibility within the male-dominant field of contemporary music.

“Ranging from contemporary avant-garde to electro-acoustics, ambient music and improvisation, the performances consist of short solo and/or ensemble interventions in carefully selected art spaces, galleries, concert halls or any other off spaces that fit to the project’s programming.”

All of the events have been welcomed by a diverse group of people aged between 16-60 years old with a particular focus on young people 25-35 years old.

Despite its nomadic activity, Grüntaler organizes approx. two events per month

Aims/objectives:

” Aim of the series is to provide a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work, exchange ideas and collaborate. In this regard, we invite emerging artists to perform next to more established ones, mixing different backgrounds and genres. Grüntaler seeks to bring visibility and awareness to local and Berlin-based artists with an emphasis on gender diversity & visibility w/in the male-dominant field of contemporary music. By doing so, Grüntaler hosts and organizes performances by inviting at least one female and male-identified artist as well as people of colour, in an attempt to promote their artistic work in equal terms and eventually foster a healthy dialogue between the artists and the public.”

Beside sound artists, curators, artists and art professionals, Grüntaler tries to engage with the local audience and people interested in various forms of art. Its mobile character gives Grüntaler the flexibility to reach out to new audiences through its collaboration with different art spaces and venues in Berlin.

The project is still ongoing and has not been evaluated yet.

Outcomes of the project:

“- audience development by connecting different artists to different venues to different audiences
– bringing exposure to more female-identified sound artists and well as breaking down diversity barriers in the experimental music scene
– providing opportunities for emerging artists to showcase their work next to more established ones”
